Journey
Bongeziwe Mabandla is a respected South African singer, composer, and guitarist. He is recognized as a key innovator of contemporary Afro-folk, blending Xhosa traditions with modern electronic sounds. His powerful voice and isiXhosa lyrics define his distinct style, placing him at the forefront of the "Black Alternative" music movement.
Hailing from the rural town of Tsolo, Eastern Cape, Mabandla's first musical experiences came from his upbringing in church and school. He moved to Johannesburg to study drama at AFDA. Although he initially focused on acting (appearing in the soap opera Generations) and painting, he taught himself the acoustic guitar and dedicated his focus to music. He credits his dramatic training with helping him develop his emotionally resonant style of musical storytelling.
Mabandla's style is an evolving blend of traditional Xhosa music, maskandi rhythms, soul, and electronica. His album releases highlight a clear progression in his production, consistently collaborating with producer Tiago Correia-Paulo. His journey began with his 2012 acoustic debut, Umlilo ("Fire"), which was centered on personal folk stories and earned him early Metro FM Award nominations and international recognition. He began integrating subtle electronic rhythms into his 2017 album, Mangaliso ("Marvel"), which proved a breakthrough, winning the South African Music Award (SAMA) for Best Alternative Music Album in 2018. His 2020 conceptual album, iimini ("The Days"), charted the dissolution of a relationship and secured his second consecutive SAMA for Best Alternative Music Album in 2021. Most recently, the 2023 album amaXesha ("The Times") further embraced contemporary afrotech and afrohouse sounds. It was praised internationally (named The Guardian's Global Album of the Month) and received the Metro FM Award for Best African Pop in 2024.
Beyond his recordings, Mabandla is highly sought after for his live performances, consistently selling out tours across South Africa, Europe, and North America. In 2023, he also made his film debut in Augure, which was honored at the Cannes Film Festival, further expanding his artistic reach.
